The owners of this incredible 2010 Craftsman in the heart of Irvington came to Designer/Architect Aram Irwin with a vision to fulfill a 50-year-old promise. When the homeowners bought this beautiful home in the 1960s, the house was nearly untouched. Typical of all craftsman homes were small compartmentalized spaces, with this home having a second-story sun porch. The homeowners came to Irwin and asked for a complete gut re-imagination of their very dated kitchen. They also wanted to renovate their upstairs bathroom, their only second-floor bathroom featuring 4 bedrooms. As well, they really needed another bathroom. So as many people have done to their Sunroom, they repurposed it and made it their highly-needed second bathroom.
While many clients want to modernize their old Portland homes, this couple wished every detail to look like it had been there for 100 years. What transpired was an incredibly detailed renovation we were thrilled to be a part of.
The kitchen featured incredible flush inset cabinets with exposed loose pin hinges. We repurposed an old pantry into an incredible butler’s pantry with an extra sink, creating the perfect coffee bar for these Portland coffee buffs. The beautiful Calcutta countertops and off-white subway tile put the finishing touches on what we feel is the ideal Period style kitchen.
The renovation of the bathrooms was a careful balance of modern convenience and preservation of the period features that the clients did not want to sacrifice. In renovating the kitchen, the clients added a few custom touches to their budget. They asked if we could use pre-made vanities that came with countertops. We scoured the internet and found two perfect vanities with sinks and faucets. With a little bit of tweaking from our master craftsmen, we were able to install them seamlessly into the design. We were quite impressed with the outcome and very proud of both these bathrooms.
The rest of the home was just a refresh of existing surfaces. The house is an incredible example of how the preservation of a Portland, Oregon, craftsman should be executed and hopefully provide another 100 years of memories for whoever calls this exceptional house their home.
